Yeah, you know ‘em. Whether it’s black & white or just film vs. digital, undoubtedly you know one. I’ve been shooting photos and video for many, many years. I was always the friend with the camera, no matter what type. I went to film school, that’s right: 16mm, splicing, apertures, filters, and C-stands. I even took photography with a manual camera I had to buy just for the class. And shot, of course, exclusively in black and white. I’m more than familiar with the rule of thirds, composition, perspective, (negative) space, and so on. Well, you gotta know the rules before you break them, right?
I’ve always had a fascination for image manipulations of all types. I played around here and there, and, not until I discovered The Gimp did I find a whole new world of art.
Speaking completely from personal experience, I have known a few people who don’t think image manipulation is art. We can even go as far as digital photography… or color. It’s kind of offensive; if I cared more, I’d be pissed. I don’t always see the point of taking a bunch of photos with people just standing there smiling with a simple point ‘n shoot; I prefer a profile or action shot myself. However, aiming for an image in which everyone looks “nice” isn’t even worthy of ridicule.
Generally, there is no real concern until someone tells me how I express myself is any less of an art than what someone else does. And even then, I don’t care all that much. But photo snobs exist and all I really do is wonder why?.
