I came this awesome list of Photoshop typographical tutorials. The thing with PS tutorials is that while some do not easily convert into Gimp tutorials, while others easily do. The is one of those former ones, only due to layer styles.

I was intrigued with the Smooth Glass Type Tutorial and immediately wanted to try it. But, as you may have guessed, no layer styles. However, if you download this script for The Gimp, you get a slightly different version of PS layer style, through scripts that work just like filters.

Photoshop Tutorial end product:

And The Gimp end product:

I used the same basic steps. Since the options are different, it’s hard to get it exactly so. Being that this is my first time doing this tutorial (and quickly I may add), its not the same. However, with some finagling, I’m sure it could be.

Here’s a simply stated tutorial on creating waved stripes with the Gimp. I have not tried this one, but it seems easy enough to do. I have done things very similarly, like grabbing a colored light streak.

Good, before you start with this tutorial, notice that I’m from Belgium, and I use the GIMP in Dutch, so I’ll have to translate some things, hope it’ll be clear. Open GIMP and create a new image. The width and height need to be the same, here I’ll use 1920×1920 (pixels).

Go to filters – render – fractal explorer, then go to “fractals” and choose “Saturn”, press ok. Then go to colors – desaturate – second option.

Make a new, transparent layer and fill it in with a colour, here I use #009cfd (blue) but you can choose whatever colour you like, red, green, orange… Then go to layer mode and choose overlay. Click CTRL+M (or use Image / Merge Image) to merge the image into one remaining layer.

Then use free selection tool (3rd selection from left) and cut the middle lines out (see screenshot if you don’t understand). Or cut the two big ones out of your picture.

Now use the “Color picker tool”. Well, just use it and fill, select left side color first and fill the white with the “bucket fill tool”. The rest of the image should be filled with the right colour. (Notice that the colours on the right and the left side aren’t the same.)

You’ll see you have some white borders, fill them in with the right colour and you’re done!

My mother-in-law recently took a trip to Australia. I took one of her photos and created an HDR-like effect with The Gimp from a single photo.

Here is the original photo of Jervis Bay, by Betsey Broze:

I didn’t make an exact tutorial, but I can give you a brief overview of what I did.

First, I duplicated the original image. With the second layer (above), I used a grain merge layer modes and then added a layer mask to the top half of the photo (the water, greens, and sky) in white. Then deleted the section over the sand. Since the greens were still to dark and hard to distinguish, I copied them to another layer (above). I duplicated that one and used grain merge at 20. For the sky, I made a layer that’s just additional blue color. Lastly, I despeckled the bottom two layers because they had a bit of grain to them (which should have been done first, lol).
