Types of Video Formats Used in Website Design

Share on:

Every business owner now realizes the value of integrating visuals on their website along with the text. Visuals will get your message across faster and appeal to a broader audience. There are two primary visual categories for web design, including photographs and videos. Integrating videos into your website design involves more than getting a professionally shot video and uploading it.

Different elements involved in using videos on your website will require the help of companies that specialize in web design in Minnesota.  One of these elements is the video format. The selection of your video format starts right from the production of your video and continues through its editing and eventual uploading. Here are the video formats currently used for websites:

Audio Video Interleaved (.AVI)

This is the oldest digital video format. It has been replaced mainly by WMV {windows media video}, but it still has a place in website design. Though the video quality for AVI is high, its file size is large. You might need about 25 GB for a 60-minute video. AVI is hence generally used for short video clips.

Motion Picture Expert Group (.MPEG)

This format supports video and audio streaming and downloading. MPEG offers a high compression rate with minimal loss of your video quality. There are several MPEG formats, including MPEG-1, -2,-4 and -7. There are three schemes used for compressing MPEG video formats, including layer-III, II and I. The compression requires complex codes, and there are special encoding tools used for this task. MPEG-4 is also called MP4 and is currently the most common video sharing format online. MPEG-2 is sometimes called VOB (video object) and is a standard video format.

Flash Formats

The two flash video formats currently used for website videos are SWF and FLV. FLV is the original flash video format and is extremely popular for video streaming on Google Video and YouTube. The files made in these formats are small and can be downloaded fast. They result in low bounce rates for your web pages. Unfortunately, some iOS devices do not support flash formats.

QuickTime Formats

The two primary types of QuickTime video formats are QT and MOV. They are compatible with multiple platforms. Though initially designed for feature-length movies, these formats are nowadays used on a broad range of online videos. Both MOV and QT formats have container files that can be separated into various tracks. Your website users can devote different tracks to the storage of multiple data, including video, effects, audio, and text.

Haphazardly incorporating videos into your website and other online platforms might be the biggest mistake you can make in digital marketing. The videos will slow down your website’s loading and contribute to a high bounce rate. They will also affect a range of elements in your website’s overall design. However, with an expert, you can get the best format for your website depending on your video type and hosting platform. This ensures that the videos on your site keep clients on your page for a long time.
